Welcome to the 1EC Barristers Newsletter, June 2026 Edition.

New House

Please join us in congratulating Josh, our first junior clerk, on the big step of buying his first property. OK, so he hasn’t moved that far away from his parents (just down the road it seems), but it’s a start!

Well done, Josh!

Appearances

Suffian Ali Husain had his first (and successful) appearance before the Court of Appeal.

Hamer v Levy [2026] EWCA Civ 662 provides an important reminder of: (i) the threshold for second appeals; (ii) the Court’s approach to technical defects in tenancy deposit prescribed information documents.

Suffian Hussain appeared for the successful respondent landlord and was instructed by Jamie Dyson and Kirsty Dare from Scott Richards Solicitors.

The full judgment is available here.

Well done, Suffian. You never forget your first time!

Meanwhile, Kolarele Sonaike represented one of the largest high-street stores in the UK in an employment case that featured tricky issues of race and religion discrimination that could have had very wide-reaching implications for the company.

The case featured anonymous briefings, covert video recordings, denials of a secret marriage, and allegations of grooming over several years.

Fortunately, the case was won and is unlikely to be appealed, so you probably won’t be hearing about it in the news.

Brazilian Chamber of Commerce

Stenio De Araujo attended the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce annual gala dinner this month – a memorable evening celebrating the strength and depth of the relationship between Brazil and the United Kingdom.

The evening offered a welcome opportunity to reconnect with fellow Brazilians who have chosen the United Kingdom as their home, and who actively contribute to the economic, social and political relationship between our two countries.

Looking dapper, Stenio!

Legal Walk

We did the Legal Walk again this year in support of the fantastic cause of supporting access to justice for those who otherwise would not be able to afford it.

Unfortunately, we forgot to take pics, except for this one below with Senior Clerk Ian Hogg and Kolarele Sonaike having words with the local police!

And finally…

We are currently recruiting for a probationary tenant (3rd 6 pupils, as they used to be called). So if you are or know of an aspiring barrister interested in joining a small but mighty civil/commercial/chancery set, please view the information here and apply as soon as possible.

Until next time…
